Behind the Scenes: A Round-Up of Recent Kidney Health Cases

When it comes to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), one thing is has become clear to me: kidneys rarely face challenges alone.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the kidney help I have been able to provide in my clinic. What has become clear to me is how often kidney disease wasn't the primary reason a client has been looking for support.

Kidney health can often sit quietly in the background, woven in amongst other health conditions, symptoms, and lifestyle goals. But equally, kidney health can be the main reason for seeking support, ranging from wanting to start supporting kidney health for the future, or responding to an existing or new diagnosis of kidney disease.

As a nutritional therapist and dietitian providing specialised support, my goal is to ensure you can find help with your health. Here is a look at some of what’s been happening behind the scenes:

Kidney Care: Different Routes, Similar Conversations

I have been working with clients who's journey with low kidney function had progressed in different ways. One client after following chemotherapy, another client after a severe UTI, and another client as a result of long-standing hypertension.

The Common Thread: While their starting points were different, the conversations felt similar. Each person was trying to understand what their kidney function meant for them and their day-to-day life, looking for support so they could get on with living.

When the Kidneys Aren't the Main Event

Sometimes kidneys aren't the main reason for seeking help in the first place. Kidney health was a piece of a wider puzzle going on:

Digestive Health & IBS: One client needed IBS and digestive support. While moderate kidney decline was sitting in the background, it didn't change why they came—but it shaped how we approached their nutrition plan and dietary changes safely.

Menopause & Elevated Cortisol: When the main concerns were hormonal fluctuations and stress management, kidney health still had to be carefully factored into the wider clinical picture before recommending any nutritional changes.

Metabolic Health & Pre-Diabetes: For someone managing a new pre-diabetes diagnosis, the focus was on blood glucose management and metabolic health. Their kidney health wasn't front and centre for them, but it was an important factor in what nutrition and dietary changes could be safely recommended.

Weight Loss & Quality of Life: When weight loss has been the primary goal, maintaining overall nutritional intake and preserving quality of life were of importance. Again, kidney health wasn't front and centre, but advice couldn't be provided without kidney health being part of the plan.

Navigating the Rare: Conn’s Syndrome & Hyperaldosteronism

Hyperaldosteronism isn’t something that comes up every day, but I’ve recently supported two clients navigating this condition.

The first client was recovering from adrenal surgery and managing hypertension. Their kidney function had remarkably improved from a severe decline up to a moderate stage post-surgery, but they were understandably overwhelmed trying to figure out what to eat while processing everything their body had been through.

The second client faced a different puzzle, a few years after adrenal surgery they were balancing declined kidney function alongside painful gout. They were already juggling a highly restrictive low-potassium and low-purine diet, all while participating in a research study—a UK clinical trial with a very small number of patients!
