Take Control of your Health!?

Updated: Aug 5

After spending many years quite unwell with my health, I knew no better than to let the journey I was on take its course, without having any idea I could be proactive and compliment my health journey with the nutrients and lifestyle that my body needed. I spent many years feeling quite unwell, not really feeling generally well with an autoimmune underactive thyroid, and experiencing the start of the health conditions that would turn out to be CFS/ME and histamine intolerance. Many years later, when CFS/ME and histamine intolerance developed symptomatically and I became unwell with them, this time I had spent many years in biomedical science and already had an interest in nutrients and how the body could optimally use them and, although it took some time, I have benefitted from that.

While I was still at university for my undergraduate degree was when it all started with the autoimmune thyroid, or so I thought. I listened to a webinar recently where the speaker was talking about autoimmune conditions. The speaker explained that one day when walking through a beautiful meadow, with the sun shining, birds tweeting and flowers growing... an autoimmune disease does not just suddenly fall out of the sky, right in front of you, unexpectedly, completely by surprise!... the time before that is usually when it develops, and there are signs... he said. Looking back to my teenage years, and even my childhood when I had many reactions to chemicals and medications, I had not linked them together and this has now become important and much time has been spent thinking about when, what, where, why, how it all started!?!...

Having two distinct occasions in life where health conditions developed, linked by a time in the middle where I never felt truly well has been profound. I settle to myself that I knew no better the first time, and give myself a break. The second time I used all my knowledge, skills and resources to get as better as I could. There are things I need to do each day to maintain the level of wellness that I have achieved with my diet and lifestyle. I have developed the knowledge I have gained during my experiences with further knowledge and skills achieved studying, via CPD and experientaially. I have also experienced the unexpected investments in my skin and hair, and benefits of healthy ageing. Would I take control of my health the first time, like I did the second? Absolutely I would!
